DIANA
MARTO is an international environmental performance art artist,
visual artist, activist, and teacher. During
her seven year residence in Southeast Asia, she began her Canto
Series, her epic spirit play with paper and dance. In
l982, she performed with 60 feet of paper on a stone jetty
in the Kamo river and simultaneously exhibited related works
on paper in a Kyoto Gallery. She selects her performance
sites for their herstorical or psychic significance
as a cluster of rocks in the South China Sea where she performed
for 10 hours, in District Six, a vibrant area in Capetown
razed to the ground, displacing 40,000 inhabitants during
Apartheid, at Catal Hoyuck, the Neolithic archaeological
site of the Mother Goddess.

Her work is process oriented,
a result of a coalescence of moment, gesture, placement
and wind. Images of her work have appeared in Japanese,
Chinese, Turkish, and English newspapers and magazines, including
front page coverage in the South China Morning Post, Sunday
Edition.
Her Canto Series has been presented
in the Middle East, Africa, Asia, North America, and Europe.
She has performed for the Crown Princess of Japan.
Her work is in private collections in Japan, Hong Kong, Turkey,
and North America. She teaches in an Art and Literacy program in the Iron Triangle. She teaches Papermaking at Esalen Institute in Big
Sur where she was an Artist in Residence. She was a Master Teacher, Artist in Residence for the Discovery Museum
in Sausalito, CA. She is an Artist-Member of Gallery Route One, Canto
XIX, “WHALE GUARDIAN,” in public spaces in California,
is an Artist in Residence at Esalen Institute, Big Sur, and
was the Master Teacher Artist in Residence at the Discovery
Museum in Sausalito, CA. She is a board member of Centro
Cultrale Vei Aztlan in San Rafael, CA, a former board member
of Sight and Insight Art Center in Mill Valley CA, of Anakultur
Cooperative in Istanbul, Turkey, and advisor to The International
Center for Celebration.
